Faculty of Arts & Society

School of Film, Television & Performing Arts

MA Screenwriting (Fiction)

Now in its sixteenth year (the course started in 1989) and being part of one of the largest full-time postgraduate film schools in the UK (The National Film & Television School being the largest) the course has a creditable history of delivery and achievements of its alumni.  Since 2001, the department has also expanded, providing undergraduate courses, too.

The course is delivered mainly by a team of professional writers and development executives that has won the confidence of key players in the industry, so much so that a Film and TV Industry Focus Event, where students, staff and industry professionals create a set of opportunities for networking, exchanging of ideas and for pitching projects, has become a firm calendar event and is held in London each year.  This event is unique amongst film schools in the UK.

Continuing successes of our alumni cover a wide spectrum of television series and serials.  They have originated new serials and single dramas, such as Mark Burt’s Forgive and Forget for ITV at Christmas 2000 and written feature films such as Catriona McGowan’s Secret Society (2000), which began life as a short film at the film school and was developed into a feature film that premiered at Cannes 2000.  Clive Dawson’s The Bunker (2001) is another feature film success.  Other students are writing for television for Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Eastenders, Peak Practice and other popular series.

We have close working relationships with the UK Film Council, Screen Yorkshire, ITV Yorkshire, Channel 4 and Working Title Films and participate in local, regional, national and international film festivals.  Finally, Skillset accreditation continues to enhance the national and international reputation of the course.
