Research Experience & Interests

Research activity includes work on local labour markets, community development, regeneration, planning regulation and rural sustainability. Steve has managed or worked on policy development and evaluations for the Employment Service, Department for Overseas Development, local authorities, TECs, EU and community regeneration projects. He has particular expertise in qualitative research.

A range of work includes being a partner and content manager of the Sustainable Open Space project for NW Europe, an FEFC-funded study of construction industry training needs, evaluation of local development plans for the Countryside Agency, appraisal of Integrated Development Plans in Yorkshire and the Humber, and a study of the financial experiences of socially excluded young people. Most recently Steve has managed studies looking at access and functions of the rural fringe in the South Pennines and Green Infrastructure and the Countryside in and around Towns for the Countryside Agency.

Steve has a particular interest in local regeneration policy and programmes, urban governance, especially in the context of sustainable development, and the developmentv and function of green infrastructure around our towns and cities.
