Classes
Most teachers use Moodle (a teaching website), which you will be able to access on the Internet. Obviously, you will need a university e-mail address to access Moodle. This takes a week or so to arrange. Internet / Wi-Fi is available through your home e-mail in the library (which is in the Patio!) until you receive your official URV e-mail address. When you are officially registered in the University, you will have access to all URV websites.
Official Registration
During your first week you can go to any class you like before finally making a definite choice of subjects. Remember that you only have to do 30 ECTS credits for one semester. Make sure none of your subjects coincide. When you are absolutely sure of the subjects you want to take, bring me your Learning Agreement so that we can write in the subjects in Catalan with the corresponding code number.
How to obtain a URV Student Card
On arrival, you should go straight to the International Centre and inform the staff there that you have arrived. The address is Avinguda Països Catalans 17-19, Tarragona. It is about five minutes by bus from the Plaça Imperial Tàrraco. Make sure you take the following documents to the International Centre:
- Your passport
- Two passport-style photographs
- An official letter from your home university that states that you are a student on the Erasmus exchange programme.
- Health Insurance documents (European Health Card) The International Centre will assist you in accommodation matters. It is absolutely essential that you register with them.
What does URV stand for?
Antoni Rovira i Virgili was an important Catalan historian. There is a street named after him and - of course - the University. Spanish & Catalan people have two surnames which they keep all their lives (you don't change your name on marriage): the first surname is the father's surname and the second is the mother's maiden name. The "i" between both means "and" in Catalan.
URV Modules
All modules in the Department of English are taught in English. The majority of modules taught in other departments in Catalan Universities are taught in Catalan. I understand that some of you might want to take modules from the Spanish department but do not know what modules are being offered. To find out more about the ECTS package for Hispanic Studies click here.
A word of warning: These modules are not designed for Erasmus students and all the teaching is in Spanish so, if your Spanish is not fluent, you will find it difficult to follow the classes.
Modules in Spanish & Catalan Language for Foreign Students
These modules are offered by the URV Language & Linguistic Services. You have to pay a small fee for Spanish classes. On the other hand, Catalan is available free of charge because it is financed by the Catalan Parliament. Access this information here.
