Austere Cultures, Cultures of Austerity: Reactions to the Erosion of Critical Spaces
Thursday 8 - Friday 9 September 2011
Broadcasting Place, Leeds Metropolitan University, City Campus, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds LS2 9EN
In this culture of austerity no area of higher education is immune, however, it is the 'luxury' of the arts, humanities and social sciences that is perceived as no longer affordable, or perhaps, even necessary.
The aim of this two day conference is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for interrogating and challenging the zeitgeist of austerity and its impact on areas such as the arts, media, politics, culture and higher education. The conference will also reach beyond the academy, theorising the effects of austerity on wider social and cultural discourses and spaces.
Delegates will be able to debate about one of the most prevalent cultural issues with eminent writers and thinkers from across a range of disciplines.
The conference comprises three keynote speeches, 8 themed sessions delivering papers and a round table discussion.
The first day of the conference also includes a film screening of Professor Michael Chanan's Chronicle of Protest (2011) and an evening meal (optional extra). Professor Chanan will be introducing the film as well as giving a paper.
Key note speakers:
Professor Les Back, Goldsmiths, University of London: Intellectual Life and the 'University of Commerce'
Dr Rebecca Bramall, University of Brighton: Lessons from history: evaluating the new austerity
Professor Griselda Pollock, University of Leeds: When, or even how to say NO! Metaphors versus Models in our Critical Responses to the Current Crisis
Delegate rates:
Two days: £95 or £50 for students
One day: £75 or £30 for students
