School of Cultural Studies


Research in the School of Cultural Studies

The School of Cultural Studies has a strong and evolving research profile. 

We have strengths in social and cultural theory, women's writing, twentieth-century literature, gender and cultural history, and media studies. Our academic team are experts in their fields and have received acclaim both nationally and internationally for their work.

The School is a lively place to undertake postgraduate study. There are currently over forty students across the taught Masters programmes: MA English: Twentieth-Century Literature, MA Screen Media Cultures and MA Social & Cultural History, and research degrees: MRes, MPhil and PhD.


A new home
The School of Cultural Studies has relocated to brand new teaching and office facilities at Broadcasting Place, across the road from the Civic Quarter Library. The School Admin Office and Academic staff are now all based at Broadcasting Place.

Research Seminar Series
The School of Cultural Studies has hosted the Research Seminar series on Wednesday afternoons for a number of years, relating to the subject areas of English Literature, History, Media and Cultural Studies.

The inaugural Research Seminar for 2009/10 is taking place on Wednesday 7 October 2009 at 5.00 pm in AG03, Broadcasting Place.

Dr Emma Robertson (Sheffield Hallam University) will be speaking about '"It is a real joy to get listening of any kind from the Homeland": Empire audience responses to BBC external broadcasts, 1932-1967.'


RAE Results News
The School of Cultural Studies participated in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 and achieved outstanding results.

Members of the academic team submitted their research as part of the University's second largest unit, Communication, Cultural and Media Studies.
