Our group has researched ways to reduce domestic energy use for nearly 20 years. We work with developers and suppliers to improve methods of constructing new homes and on refurbishing existing buildings to extend their lives and reduce their carbon emissions. We recognise the importance of passive design (such as daylighting, ventilation strategies, and developing insulation products) on buildings’ performance. We are also interested in understanding how micro-generation and other technologies can be used to reduce energy demands and on improvements to the controls and usability of the systems operating to heat and condition the internal environment.

Elm Tree Mews Field Trial report published
This technical report summarises the results and monitoring data from the Elm Tree Mews Field Trial carried out by the Centre for the Built Environment at Leeds Metropolitan University on behalf of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT). This report details the technical data from fabric performance tests carried out on the completed dwellings, site observations and photographic records of the construction process and an analysis of available site documentation and drawings.
