MA Design Culture

This Masters in Design Culture provides a unique opportunity for the advanced study of design in contemporary society. Students develop a detailed understanding of how design is practiced in the context of globalisation, advanced technologies, political economy and postmodern lifestyles, how it is mediated to its public and how, ultimately it is consumed. It therefore incorporates the study of design with other disciplines, including sociology, cultural geography, ethnography and cultural studies.  Taught by a mix of expert theoreticians and practitioners, this course is located within the creative context of the Leeds School of Art, Architecture and Design to provide a lively environment for the discussion of design both in every day life and as a profession.

Much of the course engages with real-life design scenarios within a thematic approach while employing a rigorous scholarly approach. All forms of design are taken into consideration. It simultaneously reviews design practices and explores its possible directions for the future. It is therefore both analytical and generative.

Applications are invited from design graduates seeking an enriched understanding of their specialism. This course is also suitable for students coming from its related academic fields who have a strong interest in design issues.

The course is one year full-time study or two-years part-time and it commences in October.
