Amelia Crouch | Concourse Quartet
August - October
Leeds Railway Station
Concourse Quartet is a series of short texts describing the actions of four typical characters passing time in a train station. The text is rendered in four different colours with each colour representing a separate character. The words are imagined but have the potential to mimic actual activities happening in the station as the billboard is being read. Evoking the quick glances and momentary interactions we have with others in transitional public places, the sparse content of these cameos allows the reader to weave their own imaginings into these mini-narratives.
Concourse Quartet is the second piece as part of The Billboard Project at Leeds Railway Station.
Amelia Crouch is an artist whose artwork often uses words or a combination of text and image. She is intrigued by the ability of words to evoke other senses and call up myriad associations. Her work attempts to tap into what might be called a 'collective cultural imagery' - the associations and mental images that people carry with them already, that they have absorbed from the world around them.
Working in media including drawing, print, painting and video she often uses methods of quotation and juxtaposition. She writes texts herself or use and adapts text or stylistic tropes from a variety of sources including proverbs and sayings, historical narratives, descriptions of photo/film images, autobiography and stories supplied by others.
