Oliver Bray
I am a Senior Lecturer in Performance Practice here at Leeds Met. I also course lead the BA(Hons) degree programme in Contemporary Performance Practices.
Like all of the Performing Arts staff at Leeds Met I am a practicing artist (Artistic Director of Until Thursday Theatre Company)- and this 'real-world' experience helps to inform my creative teaching practice. I see my practice/research as a healthy mix of professional artistic practice and teaching/academic activity in HE. I find it increasingly difficult to separate these two areas - this is something I'm very happy about. The methodologies of creative practice underpin my teaching and a main focus of my research centers around recognising both teachers and learners as professional practitioners - helping to pioneer the development of the interesting artists of tomorrow. I also believe that these methodologies can be valuably re-appropriated to other subject areas and provide useful models for other disciplines.
My research interests include; self-consciousness in performance and global performance politics in contemporary culture. I am particularly interested in innovations in teaching practice and the relationship of practice to pedagogy. I have performed in and directed performance work that has toured both nationally and internationally, delivered conference papers and published academic articles considering my research.
